Welcome to the Smarter Balanced Secure Pilot Test

This portal is the gateway to the systems used by the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium Secure Pilot Test. Use this site to access the Test Information Distribution Engine (TIDE), the Test Administrator Interface, and the software download for the secure browser for student computers.

Important Information

  • Report Form for Testing Improprieties and Irregularities
    Instructions for reporting testing improprieties and irregularities and a report form are now available under Resources and Documentation (Additional Resources).

  • Information for Schools Administering Braille Tests
    Information for schools administering Braille tests is now available under Resources and Documentation (Additional Resources). This document provides direction on where to find administration guidance, and includes information specific to Braille test administration.

  • Spanish version of the Parent/Guardian Letter
    A Spanish version of the Parent/Guardian Letter is now available on the portal. This Spanish language version of the Parent/Guardian Letter was prepared and generously shared by the Santa Maria-Bonita School District of California.

  • Performance Tasks Training Module for Pilot Test
    The Performance Tasks Training Module for the Pilot Test is now available under Resources and Documentation (Training and Tutorials). This tutorial provides detailed overview on what performance tasks are and how to administer them. Users can view either the HTML5 version (does not require Flash) or Flash version (requires Flash) of this tutorial. When viewing the HTML5 version, users should use one of the following browsers:
    • Internet Explorer 9 or later
    • Safari 5.1 or later
    • Google Chrome 17 or later

  • Tutorials for the Student Interface of the Online System
    Six brief tutorials are now available under Resources and Documentation (Training and Tutorials). These tutorials demonstrate how students may access various tools within the Student Interface of the Online Testing System depending on the grade and content area. Users can view either the HTML5 version (does not require Flash) or Flash version (requires Flash) of these tutorials. When viewing the HTML5 version, users should use one of the following browsers:
    • Internet Explorer 9 or later
    • Safari 5.1 or later
    • Google Chrome 17 or later

  • Google Chromebooks
    Chromebooks are an approved device for the pilot administration. AIR has worked with Google to develop a secure testing environment using Chromebooks. As a result, no secure browser is required to be installed on Chromebooks. Instead, students must log in to a Chromebook using a specific computer login profile (for more information, please click here). However, note that when a new user gets added to TIDE, they may not immediately get Chromebook accounts as it takes a couple of days for to process the request and generate the account. Should your school need to test immediately using Chromebooks, please call the Smarter Balanced Help Desk so that AIR can work with Google to get your school's Chromebook devices set up as quickly as possible.

  • Test Administrator Checklist
    A Test Administrator checklist is now available on the portal under Resources and Documentation (Additional Resources). The purposes of this checklist is to provide guidance to administrators on key activities to be performed before, during, and after the pilot administration.

  • Test Administration Manual
    The Directions for Administration sections of the Test Administration Manual have been updated as of 2/21/2013. See the Change Logs at the end of the Test Administration Manual and the TA User Guide for specific information about the updates.

  • The Smarter Balanced Pilot Test is open.
    The Secure Pilot Test opened on February 20, 2013. When schools agreed to participate in the Secure Pilot Test, they were assigned a two-week testing window. Please plan to test your students during your assigned window. If you have questions about when you are scheduled to test, please contact the Smarter Balanced Help Desk.

  • Recorded Training Presentation for District Coordinators and Test Administrators
    A recording of a live Training Presentation for Coordinators and Test Administrators is now available underResources and Documentation (Training and Tutorials). This is a slide show with voiceover. This presentation provides a high level overview of the Smarter Balanced Pilot Test and how coordinators and administrators need to prepare for this spring's administration.

  • Training Presentation for Coordinators and Test Administrators
    The Training Presentation for Coordinators and Test Administrators is now available under the Resources tab (Training and Tutorials). Note that this is a slide show only. This presentation provides a high level overview of the Smarter Balanced Pilot Test and how coordinators and administrators need to prepare for this spring's administration.

  • Testing with iPads and Chromebooks
    Additional information about administering the Secure Pilot Test using iPads and Chromebooks is now available under the Secure Browser tab (scroll down and click on iPad or Google Chromebooks).

  • Technical Specifications Manual
    An updated version of the Technical Specifications Manual was posted on February 15 under Resources and Documentation (Manuals and User Guides). The last page of the manual lists the changes from the earlier version.

  • Training Modules for Pilot Test
    Four training Modules for the Pilot Test are now available under Resources and Documentation (Training and Tutorials). These tutorials will familiarize coordinators and administrators with important information on various components of the Pilot Test. The fifth training module on Performance Tasks will be ready the week of 2/20/13. Please check back. When viewing these tutorials, users should use one of the following browsers:

  • Classroom Activity Administration Guidelines
    The Classroom Activity Administration Guidelines are available under Resources and Documentation (Additional Resources). These guidelines provide information to prepare Test Administrators for administering a classroom activity.

  • Technology Requirements for Pilot Test Braille Test
    Technology Requirements for Pilot Test Braille Test have been posted under Resources and Documentation (Additional Resources). This document provides technology requirements for administering the Pilot Test to students with the Braille accommodation.

  • Accessibility and Accommodations Guidelines
    Pilot Test Accessibility and Accommodations Guidelines have been posted under Resources and Documentation (Additional Resources). These guidelines provide a high-level description of the tools available to students who participate in the Pilot Test as well as guidance to school personnel.

  • Test Information Distribution Engine (TIDE) is now open.
    TIDE is now open. TIDE provides administrators with the tools to add and manage users and students participating in the Smarter Balanced Secure Pilot Test.

    School and district users can access TIDE by clicking the [School] or [District] cards and then clicking [Online TIDE System]. If you are a designated school or district coordinator, you should have received an email with information about accessing TIDE at the time your school signed up for the Secure Pilot Test. School and District Coordinators can create accounts in TIDE for Test Administrators. All Secure Pilot Test Administrators need to be added to TIDE before they can set up and administer test sessions.

  • The Smarter Balanced Training Tests are now open.

  • Bandwidth Checker
    The Smarter Balanced bandwidth checker allows you to assess how many students can test simultaneously through your school's network. To access the bandwidth checker and check the current bandwidth of your network, click [Diagnostic Tools]. The following operating systems and web browsers are supported:
    • Windows XP (with Service Pack 3), Vista, 7, 8: Mozilla Firefox
    • Mac OS 10.4.4–10.8: Firefox
    • Linux Fedora Core 6 or 16; Ubuntu 9–11.10: Firefox
    • Apple tablets (iPad) running iOS 6.0+: Safari
    • Android tablets running 4.0+: Google Chrome

  • For Technology Coordinators
    Please whitelist the following IP address in any proxy servers and firewalls you have established: 198.61.246.201. Doing so will ensure access to the Smarter Balanced Pilot sites and the bandwidth checker.
